Payne is the author of over a dozen plays, which have been performed on stages across the United States, including Chicago's Steppenwolf Wolf Theatre, The East 4th Street Theatre in Manhattan, the Georgia Ensemble Theatre and more. Payne's plays have been nominated for Outstounding World Premiere and The Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award at the Suzi Awards. One of which won The Gene-Gabriel Moore Award in 2013.
